Directeur de recherches CNRS (INC, section 15), je me définis comme un spécialiste de Microscopie Electronique "tous terrains". Mon crédo est d’étudier tous types de matériaux réels au moyens des outils les plus adaptés en microscopie électronique, des techniques de microscopie à balayage classiques et moins classiques (EBSD, mode transmission basse tension), microscopie à faisceau d’ions focalisés (tomographie et étude des contrastes) mais surtout microscopie électronique en transmission (mode conventionnel pour l’analyse des défauts cristallins et des phénomènes d’ordre, imagerie en résolution atomique assistée par simulations, spectroscopie de pertes d’énergie des électrons, tomographie et plus récemment microscopie dite environnementale).

Mes travaux s’appuient sur les développements de matériaux et de multi-matériaux au sein de MATEIS à l’INSA de Lyon, un laboratoire de Science des matériaux à l’interface des champs disciplinaires physique, chimie, sciences pour l’ingénieur et nanotechnologies, et en collaborations avec de nombreux laboratoires de l’Université de Lyon (IRCELYON, ILM, INL, LTDS, LaHC,…). Responsable du groupe de microscopie de MATEIS de 2007 à 2010, j’ai été le Directeur de la Fédération CLYM de 2007 à 2015 : le  Consortium LYon-St-Etienne de Microscopie est une des structures essentielles d’animation en région Rhône-Alpes en matière de caractérisation fine des matériaux par microscopie électronique. J’ai ainsi été le porteur scientifique du projet d’acquisition sur le sol français du premier microscope électronique en transmission corrigé des aberrations et fonctionnant en mode environnemental, c’est-à-dire sous pression de gaz, permettant d’étudier des réactions structurales, morphologiques et chimiques, en particulier de nanocatalyseurs sous conditions operando de gaz et de température. Ces derniers travaux concernent notamment le développement de la tomographie électronique rapide qui ouvre la voie au suivi en 3D et en temps réel de nanomatériaux en cours d’évolution in situ.

Cette culture "microscopie et multi-matériaux" m’a permis d’être le premier Directeur de la Fédération de Recherche nationale "Microscopie Electronique en Transmission et Sonde Atomique" (METSA, FR 3507 CNRS-CEA) de 2012 à 2015. Longtemps membre des conseils et bureaux de la Société Française des Microscopies (SFµ), j’en ai été le bras armé pour présider l’édition 2016 du Congrès Européen de Microscopie organisé tous les 4 ans sous les auspices de l‘European Microscopy Society (EMS dont je suis membre du bureau), et pour la première fois accueillie en France (Lyon EMC2016). Je suis membre de l’Editorial Board du Journal of Microscopy ; auteur de plus de 120 publications et associé à plus de 250 communications à congrès, j’ai donné près de 80 conférences invitées et encadré plus de 20 doctorants ou post-doctorants.
