Thibaut Devièse


I am an analytical chemist by training and I apply my skills in the field of cultural heritage, mostly on archaeological material. After my PhD, I worked for 5 years at the British Museum in the scientific department where I conducted research on organic materials, such as residues in ceramics and natural organic colorants in textiles. Then, I joined the University of Oxford in 2014 to work in the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit. My research was focused on improving the methodology for the radiocarbon dating of collagenous materials to make it more reliable. I applied it to bone fragments, mostly from the Upper Palaeolithic period, and demonstrated that dates previously obtained on collagen often severely underestimated the true age due to unremoved contamination in the samples. I have worked on a wide range of specimens from Eurasia (France, Belgium, Spain, Czechia, Croatia, Russia, Mongolia and China), and on several sites in the Americas to identify more precisely the period during which the first humans colonised this continent. In October 2020, I joined Aix Marseille University as Associate Professor in Geosciences. This allows me to continue developing my research in Palaeolithic archaeology but also to incorporate a palaeoenvironmental dimension into my work.
