Sylvain Pioch is currently a researcher at LAGAM laboratory as associate professor at University Paul-Valéry Montpellier in environmental/urban planning, dedicated to marine and coastal area. After a PhD in coastal geography partly done in TUMSAT (Japan), he continued as a post-doctoral fellow at Nova University (Florida, USA), and IFREMER (France) working on environmental planning, ecological engineering and scoring methods to value gains and losses of ecological functions.
He works on issues linked to the mitigation of anthropogenic impacts, eco-design / green infrastructure / NBS (harbor & maritime infrastructures, eco-designed, eco-friendly materials, artificial habitats), governance of mitigation in France and the US (laws & rules, guideline and ref. frameworks, transactional processes) and ecological engineering tools.
His last research are focuses on hybrid citizen participatory tools (“e-debat”), in the aim to enhance environmental concerns in land planning. He teaches Graduate students at University Paul-Valéry Montpellier, Nova University (Florida) and in 6 other different training programs (ENTPE, school of civil engineering…)
