Sophie Payot-Lacroix


Biography:

I obtained my PhD in cellular, molecular and structural biology at Nancy University in 1999. My PhD work, carried under the supervision of H. Petitdemange, focused on cellobiose catabolism and sporulation of the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium cellulolyticum. After having insight on the green waste recycling potential of bacteria, I spent one year in England (team of D. O’Connor, University of Southampton) to explore stress response and virulence of Salmonella Typhimurium. In September 2000, I was appointed as permanent INRA research scientist in the UR086 INRA (Tours-Nouzilly) where I joined the antibioresistance team of E. Chaslus-Dancla to work on the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in Campylobacter. In 2006, I moved to Nancy to work on gene transfers mediated by Integrative Conjugative Elements (ICEs) in streptococci in the UMR1128 UL/INRA DynAMic. In January 2017, I was promoted INRA Senior Researcher (Directeur de Recherches INRA).

Research topic:

Since more than 20 years now, my research work focuses on the fascinating power of bacteria to adapt to their environment: from flexibility of the catabolic pathways to sporulation for a cellulolytic anaerobic bacterium, host adaptation of the zoonotic pathogen Salmonella Typhimurium, antibiotic resistance of the zoonotic pathogen Campylobacter and adaptation of streptococci through horizontal gene transfers mediated by mobile genetic elements. Keeping in mind the global bacterial physiology, I am interested in characterizing these mechanisms of adaptation at the molecular level. My current research projects aim at determining biotic and abiotic factors (cell surface composition, stress, sub-lethal antibiotic concentrations, biofilm) that promote transfer by conjugation of Mobile Genetic Elements (in particular Integrative and Conjugative Elements (ICEs) and Integrative Mobilizable Elements (IMEs)) of streptococci and elucidating the underlying molecular mechanisms of regulation. I am also interested in the prevalence and diversity of ICEs and IMEs in the genomes of Firmicutes and their role in antibiotic resistance dissemination.

Member of the Scientific Committee of the French National Observatory for Epidemiology of Bacterial Resistance to Antimicrobials (www.onerba.org) (2003-2004) and of INRA Microbiology Department (2006-), team leader (2009-2015), Quality Manager (of INRA Microbiology Department 2008-2012 and of UMR1128 since 2007) and UMR1128 Deputy Director (2018-). Coordination of 7 regional projects, an INRA-Anses national project and a national project funded by the French National Research Agency (MATICE ANR-15-CE21-0007).
