Sophie HERMENT


Sophie Herment is holder of an agrégation in English studies and full Professor (1st class, CNU) in English phonetics and phonology at Aix-Marseille University. She is a member of the Laboratoire Parole et Langage where she coordinates one of the 4 teams of the lab ("systems and uses") and supervises the publication of the on-line journal TIPA.

She works mainly on prosody (she takes part in the Aix Prosody Group) and her research interests concern the varieties of English, the prosody/syntax interface, L2 prosody, and corpus prosody. She coordinates with 3 colleagues from Toulouse and Paris the PAC programme, an interdisciplinary linguistic research program concentrating on the phonology of contemporary English and she is in charge of the PAC-prosody group. She presides the French scholarly association ALOES (Association des Linguistes Oralistes de l'Enseignement Supérieur secondaire et élémentaire), which gathers specialists in oral English. 

Sophie Herment has organized or co-organized several national and international workshops and conferences and regularly contributes to the organization of national or international meetings (Speech Prosody, RFP, PAC, ALOES) as a member of the scientific committee. She is regularly called on to conduct scientific evaluations by French and foreign journals or editors, to take part in recruiting committees and to be a member of HDR (habilitations to conduct research) and PhD committees. She is a member of the 11th section of the CNU (Conseil National des Universités).

She is currently supervising 3 PhD dissertations and is an adviser for 2 HDR.
