Rémy Gourdon

Rémy GOURDON is a full Professor at INSA (National Institute for Applied Sciences), Lyon, France. He was born in 1961 in Constantine (Algeria), and studied primary and secondary school in Nîmes, France. He moved to Lyon for higher education where he graduated his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at the University Claude Bernard. Then, he graduated his master’s degree at INSA Lyon in 1984 with a master’s thesis on anaerobic digestion of pig manure, and his PhD in environmental sciences and engineering at INSA Lyon in 1987 on anaerobic biological treatment of landfill leachates. He then worked as a post-doctoral fellow in the Biotechnology Laboratory of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT, Newark, NJ, USA), where he studied the biosorption of heavy metals by microbial cells. He joined INSA Lyon as a faculty member in 1990 where he became a full professor in 1999. There, he was successively appointed Director of the European undergraduate engineering department EURINSA from 1999 to 2003, and Coordinator of a master’s program on Industrial and Urban Environment from 2001 to 2005. He served as deputy director from 2003 to 2005 and director from 2005 to 2007 of the Laboratory of Environmental Analysis of Industrial Systems and Processes (LAEPSI). His laboratory merged in January 2007 with two other laboratories to create the Laboratory of Civil and Environmental Engineering (LGCIE), of which he was the deputy director until 2011. He was also the head of one of the 2 research groups of the lab, entitled “Waste, Waster, Environment & Pollutions”, until the end of year 2014. His research interests cover the description of coupled biological / physical / chemical phenomena governing the fate of contaminants in solid waste, soils and sediments, and in the biological treatments of organic solid waste. He is currently involved in research dealing with constructed wetlands for domestic wastewater treatments. He is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and Chief Editor of the peer reviewed Journal “Déchets, Sciences et Techniques”. He teaches general chemistry and environmental sciences & engineering and is involved in scientific committees of a number of organizations and institutes. He is also regularly involved in scientific committees of international conferences, and serves as an expert for the evaluation of several programs in France and abroad.
