THÈME PRINCIPAL DE RECHERCHE

Ecologie, gestion et conservation de la diversité des communautés animales et végétales des écosystèmes forestiers tropicaux : impacts des perturbations naturelles et anthropiques sur les réseaux d’interactions plantes-animaux et le maintien de la diversité faunistique et floristique.

 

POINTS FORTS DES RECHERCHES

Etudes comparatives de plusieurs espèces végétales en Guyane (973, France).

Analyse spatio-temporelle : échelle locale, régionale (Amazonie et Plateau des Guyanes) et intercontinentale (Afrique centrale) ; variation interannuelle des processus de dissémination/prédation des graines de Carapa spp (un produit forestier non-ligneux) par les vertébrés.

Situations contrastées des sites d'étude: forêt intacte naturelle (Nouragues, Guyane), forêt chassée et/ou exploitée (Montagne de Kaw, Guyane ; Observatoire Homme-Milieux OHM Oyapock, Guyane ; Montagne Tortue, Guyane), et forêt fragmentée (Ngel Nyaki, Nigeria ; Malaisie ; Thaïlande).

RÉSUMÉ

Les interactions plantes-animaux en forêt tropicale sont cruciales pour le maintien de la diversité. Mes recherches portent sur l’écologie des communautés animales et végétales. J’étudie les interactions entre les vertébrés frugivores et granivores, et végétales (des essences commerciales et des palmiers tropicaux), les premiers exerçant des pressions de sélection sur les seconds. Par leur action, les animaux frugivores et granivores favorisent le transport des diaspores ou les éliminent. La dissémination et la prédation des graines sont deux processus vitaux du cycle de la régénération en forêt tropicale ; ils permettent le déplacement des plantes dans lhabitat mais limitent également la dominance de certaines espèces au sein de la communauté végétale. En retour, la grande diversité et la faible densité des espèces offrent aux animaux une diversité de ressources alimentaires, sous forme de fleurs, de fruits et de graines. La disponibilité de ces ressources varie dans le temps, à court et moyen terme, et dans l’espace, en fonction de la maille de la diversité du couvert végétal. De fortes contraintes spatio-temporelles affectent l’alimentation des animaux qui permettent d’expliquer la distribution non aléatoire des animaux en forêt. Cette disponibilité alimentaire est également affectée par les variations naturelles (El Niño/La Niña) et le changement climatique. J’analyse comment les perturbations d’origine anthropique (chasse, exploitation forestière, fragmentation, route) modifient les interactions plantes-animaux ainsi que les processus de régénération, et impactent la survie à court et moyen terme des espèces végétales. Nombre d’entre elles sont des essences commerciales ligneuses ou non ligneuses. Le point fort de mes activités est de cibler ces travaux en écologie sur des arbres d’intérêt économique dans des contextes naturels et perturbés par les activités humaines. Je collabore avec des systématiciens, des écologistes, des zoologistes, des ethnobiologistes et les gestionnaires des forêts tropicales. Mes travaux sur l’écologie des communautés animales et végétales qui vivent en étroite interaction et l’étude de la diversité des forêts tropicales contribuent donc à la préservation des ressources naturelles ayant un fort potentiel économique dans le cadre du développement durable et de la gestion de la diversité des pays tropicaux.
