Michel Denis microbial ecologist

Physicien de formation, M. Denis a été recruté au CNRS en 1969 pour développer des approches de physique en biologie : étude du transfert d’électrons dans le système respiratoire mitochondrial à l’aide notamment de différentes techniques optiques, potentiométriques et magnétiques. M. Denis a rejoint le Centre d’Océanologie de Marseille (COM) en 1985 pour appliquer ces approches aux microorganismes marins dont les systèmes respiratoires étaient largement inconnus. Son activité a évolué vers l’étude individuelle des microorganismes marins à l’aide de la cytométrie en flux, technique émergente dans le milieu marin à la fin des années 1980. C’est ainsi qu’il a introduit cette approche au COM et formé des étudiants dans cette discipline. En faisant l’acquisition du premier cytomètre en flux submersible et automatisé en 2004,  il a développé avec Melilotus Thyssen, l’observation haute fréquence in situ du phytoplancton dont son groupe est devenu un leader mondial. Parallèlement, avec le concours de Gérald Grégori, il a créé en 2005 une plate-forme régionale de cytométrie pour la microbiologie (PRECYM, labellisée Pôle Mer, https://precym.mio.univ-amu.fr/) pour mettre à disposition des chercheurs du secteur public ou privé et des entreprises (biotechnologie) des outils performants (analyseurs, trieurs, cytomètres automatisés) et le savoir-faire du groupe.
