Regarding empirical research, I am interested in the functions of expressive behavior in social interaction. I conducted observational research on the emotional management of interpersonal distance in the crowded metros of Delhi, New York, and Paris. I currenty carry out field experiments to explore the nonverbal communication of racism in the context of relations in public. My recent theoretical work aims to reformulate the social constructionist view of emotions and to examine the possibility of an antipositivist naturalism for the social sciences.
