Présentation

[Prof. Liming Chen] is a distinguished Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Ecole Centrale de Lyon, University of Lyon, France, and a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) through the chair of innovation since October 2022. He received his BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Nantes in 1984, his MSc and PhD in computer science from the University Pierre and Marie Curie Paris 6 in 1986 and 1989 respectively. He was an associate professor at the Université de Technologie de Compiègne before he joined Ecole Centrale de Lyon as Professor in 1998. He served as the Chief Scientific Officer in the Paris-based company Avivias from 2001 to 2003, and the scientific multimedia expert in France Telecom R&D China in 2005. He was the head of the Department of Mathematics and Computer science from 2007 through 2016. His current research interests include computer vision, machine learning, and multimedia with a particular focus on robot vision and learning since 2016. Liming has over 300 publications and successfully supervised over 40 PhD students. He has been a grant holder for a number of research grants from EU FP program, French research funding bodies and local government departments. Liming has so far guest-edited 5 journal special issues. He is an associate editor for Eurasip Journal on Image and Video Processing, area editor for Computer Vision and Image Understanding and a senior IEEE member. From 2007 to 2016, Liming was Director of the Mathematics-Computer Science Department (DMI), one of the five departments at Ecole Centrale de Lyon, a mandate renewed once in July 2013. DMI includes two teaching teams and hosts two laboratory structures, ICJ in mathematics and Liris in computer science, both UMR CNRS and multi-site. According to the internal rules of the ECL, the department director leads a permanent mission of coordination between his various teaching teams and research units. He also has hierarchical regulatory authority in terms of the safety of people, property and premises which contribute, in whole or in part, to the mission of the Department. Liming was also one of the eight founding professors of Liris, which brings together the computer science research forces of UCB, INSA Lyon, Lyon 2 University and represents more than 300 members today, including more than 150 faculty. Since the creation of Liris in 2003, Liming was continuously responsible for the LIRIS site at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon from 2003 to 2016. From 2004 to 2005, he was responsible for one of the four axes of research, image and video, from Liris. The axis was then composed of 15 permanent staff including 4 professors, 1 CNRS researcher and 19 doctoral students.Liming was a member of the laboratory council from 2003 to 2006 then again to the laboratory council from June 2011 to May 2015 for 4 years. As head of the ECL site, Liming also participated in the work of the Extended Management Committee of the laboratory (CDE) and the scientific council which notably included the laboratory director, his deputy directors as well as the site managers. Since his arrival at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon in September 1998, Liming have founded and led a research group focused on the theme "Computer vision, machine learning & multimedia" whose ultimate objective is to develop theories, algorithms and techniques to provide machines with intelligence to understand scene images and multimedia data. The areas of interest are mainly in the recognition of visual objects and high-level concepts in images, facial biometrics as well as emotional calculation for the understanding of emotion. A turning point has been taken since 2016 towards robotics as the privileged field of our work. Some other highlights of his career. Liming was an elected member of the UTC board of directors from 1993 to 1997. In 2001, he was the founder of the company Avivias, then based in Paris, specializing in the management of audiovisual assets. Liming was the scientific advisor of the company until September 2003. In 2005, Liming was multimedia scientific expert of France Telecom R&D China. He is a senior IEEE member (7% of 431,000 IEEE members), member elected in September 2014, then re-elected from December 2018 for 4 years on the Board of the French association for the recognition and interpretation of forms (AFRIF ), and associate editor of the Eurasip Journal on Image and Video Processing. He is also area chair of the journal Computer Vision and Image Understanding (CVIU) since May 2021. He is a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) since October 1, 2022. Liming was awarded the 2022 applied research prize by the Federation of Electrical, Electronic and Communication Industries (FIEEC) and BPI France.
