A former student of École Normale Supérieure de Cachan, Julie Vatain-Corfdir is associate professor at Sorbonne Université, and a junior member of the Institut universitaire de France (2023-2028). Her research is centered on the dramatic text – on the page, on stage, and in translation. She is the author of Traduire la lettre vive (Peter Lang, 2012, recipient of the SAES/AFEA book of the year award), and has edited several collections of essays and conversations with artists, including American Dramaturgies for the 21st Century (SUP, 2021), American Musicals: Stage and Screen / La scène et l’écran with Anne Martina (SUP, 2019), La Scène en version originale (SUP, 2015), and Lectures de Tom Stoppard: Arcadia with Liliane Campos (PUR, 2011). She has written articles and book chapters on several anglophone playwrights (Young Jean Lee, Annie Baker, Tina Howe, Sarah Ruhl, Arthur Miller, Thornton Wilder, Tennessee Williams, TS Eliot, Oscar Wilde), and a number of translations of contemporary plays as well as short stories, a novel and a film.
Her current research project investigates the writing of resilience in contemporary American theatre, in particular in plays written – or performances devised by – women. She is also one of the scientific coordinators of the ACTiF research program dedicated to the archive and the visibility of US theater in France (program funded by ANR and coordinated by Emeline Jouve).
