Franz Dietrich on HAL

Franz Dietrich is Directeur de Recherche of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) at the Paris School of Economics, affiliated to Centre d’Economie de la Sorbonne since 2013.

Research interests: He is an interdisciplinary scholar working in the overlap of economics and philosophy. His research deals primarily with the theoretical foundations of decisions by single individuals or groups, addressing on the one hand formal and mathematical questions, and on the other hand philosophical, normative and methodological questions.

  • Regarding individuals, he works for instance on a reason-based theory of choice, as well as on context-dependence, preference change, normative uncertainty, and terrorism prevention.
  • Regarding groups, he works for instance on judgment aggregation, probability aggregation, and welfare economics.

An interdisciplinary career: He received a PhD in mathematics (2003, University of Oxford) and held positions at Konstanz University (2002-5, post-doc in the Philosophy, Probability & Modelling Group), Maastricht University (2005-8, Assistant Professor in the Economics Faculty), the London School of Economics (2006-11, Nuffield Fellow, later Ludwig Lachmann Fellow), and University of East Anglia (2011-15, Professor of Economics). In 2010 he was awarded (jointly with Christian List) the 5th Social Choice and Welfare Prize of the Society for Social Choice and Welfare.
