Elodie Merlot (agronomist, PhD, HDR) is a research scientist from INRAE, the French national institute for research in agriculture, nutrition and environment. After her agricultural engineer studies and PhD, Elodie started to work at INRAE from 2004, with a focus on animal welfare and health. Following the idea that physiological and mental states constantly influence each other, she studies how the physical and social living environment of farm animals as well as rearing practices influence animals’ physiology, an especially their immune function. She worked on prenatal stress, social stress and environmental enrichment in pigs, and has recently started to develop projects targeting problems specific to organic production. Currently, Elodie is managing a research team of ten people at INRAE, whose scientific objectives are to investigate the multifaceted (nutritional, endocrine, immune and behavioral) responses developed by the pigs to maintain their homeostasis in a changing environment. The applied aim is to propose new rearing practices that should contribute to promote animal health and welfare in an agro-ecology perspective.
