Les recherches de D. Galop sont centrées sur l’étude des relations et des co-évolutions environnement-sociétés sur la longue durée. Elles s’appuient sur une retro-observation interdisciplinaire des processus socio-écologiques qui combine l’étude multi-proxy du contenu paléobiologique d’archives sédimentaires (Pollen, microfossiles non-poliniques, stomates, micro-charbons) à des approches éco-historiques (archives textuelles, cartes anciennes, etc…). Principalement orientées vers l’étude des dynamiques propres aux milieux montagnards (Pyrénées, Massif central, Tyrol), ses recherches concernent également les zones tropicales d’Amérique centrale (Guatemala, Mexique) et des Caraïbes (île de Saint-Martin, Marie Galante). Ses recherches en cours concernent l’étude des relations climat-sociétés en haute montagne pyrénéenne (projet ANPYR) et au Guatemala (séquence Tuspan 2) et l’étude des relations entre pratiques pastorales et diversité végétale au cours des 200 dernières années. Ce dernier volet des recherches vise à promouvoir le transfert entre retro-observation et gestion contemporaine des espaces d’altitude.
