RESEARCH PROFILE 1. Diachronic Construction Approach My research framework aligns with diachronic construction grammar and diachronic construction morphology, aiming to investigate motivation phenomena at various levels within the lexicon: at the micro level of very specific constructions and at the meso level of broader constructions. I am particularly interested in the competition between class-changing affixes and distributional competition, in other words, synonymy. 2. Corpus-Driven Approach My approach involves corpus-driven analysis, incorporating cognitive aspects and relies on calculating degrees of semantic proximity. I apply a methodology for analyzing collexemes diachronically using historical corpora such as COHA (Corpus of Historical American), EEBO (Early English Books Online), and the Penn corpus. The distributional semantics methodology is adapted to study the evolution or variation in behavior across text types and periods. The Sketch Engine platform is also employed, especially in lexical semantics, to study semantic proximities of lexical forms. This approach is combined with lexicographic research using the OED, a proven and unparalleled resource for diachronic study (see Hilpert 2006, Allan 2012, Smith 2016). 3. Iconicity and Phonetic Symbolism in the Lexicon My research projects on lexicon motivation began with the study of phonosemantic phenomena in the lexicon, particularly cognitive blends (Smith 2012) and phonaesthemes (Smith 2016). These works have shown that phonosymbolism is far from a minor phenomenon, and non-morphemic structures like "fl-" have the ability to structure the lexicon, particularly the mental lexicon (see Bergen). A constructional approach to these unconventional structures seems capable of explaining the attraction of these forms that have long been overlooked in linguistics. 4. The MultiDES Project Currently, the MultiDES project represents a major new focus on issues of interlanguage synonymy and polysemy at CRISCO. I am currently co-leading the MultiDES project at CRISCO, which has applied for RIN funding, first in November 2020, and again in November 2021. Within the CRISCO laboratory, the MultiDES project has a primary objective: to develop a French-English synonymous extension while refining the current parameterization of synonymous relations and their contextualization in the existing tool. MultiDES takes an innovative approach, considering both languages as a single semantic space by integrating English synonyms with those of French, and vice versa. Domaines de recherche ======================== HDR obtenue le 22 juin 2022 sur la thématique: La motivation dans le lexique de l'anglais: approche constructionnelle diachronique. 3.1 Lexicologie et sémantique lexicale -------------------------------------- Mes axes de recherche se concentrent sur la **lexicologie**, notamment la **sémantique lexicale**, la **diachronie** et les phénomènes de changements dans la langue (en particulier les processus de métonymie et de métaphore, mais aussi l’analogie et la réanalyse). Le fil conducteur de mes recherches est l’intérêt pour les phénomènes de **motivation** dans le système de la langue. Mon approche est expérimentale, celle du croisement de l'approche lexicographique, l'approche de corpus, et vise à mettre au jour les variations et changements dans la continuum lexico-grammatical de l'anglais. Mon sujet d'HDR représente une feuille de route de mon projet sur la **combinatoire motivationnelle dans le lexique** (ou le continuum lexico-grammatical) de l'anglais. 3.2. Approche de construction diachronique ------------------------------------------ Mon cadre d'étude se rapproche de la grammaire de construction diachronique, et la morphologie de construction diachronique, avec pour objectif d'étudier les phénomènes de motivation à plusieurs niveaux dans le lexique: au niveau micro des constructions très spécifiques et au niveau méso de constructions plus larges. Je m'intéresse notamment à la compétition des affixes de changement de classe et à la compétition distributionnelle en générale, autrement dit la synonymie. 3.3. Approche de corpus outillée --------------------------------- Mon approche est l’une **d’analyse de corpus outillée**, mais aussi **cognitive**, et se fonde sur le **calcul des degrés de proximité sémantique**. Utilisation de la méthodologie d'analyse des collexèmes en diachronie à partir de corpus historiques, tels que COHA (Corpus of Historical American), EEBO (Early English Books Online), Penn corpus. La méthodologie de semantique distributionnelle est adaptée à l'étude de l'évolution, ou de la variation des comportements selon les types de textes et selon les périodes. La plateforme Sketch Engine est égamement employée notamment en sémantique lexicale afin d'étudier les proximités sémantiques de formes lexicales. Cette approche est combinée à une étude lexicographique à partir de l'OED, une source démontrée comme étant fiable et une ressource inégalée pour l'étude diachronique (voir Hilpert 2006, Allan 2012, Smith 2016). 3.4. L'iconicité et le symbolisme phonétique dans le lexique ------------------------------------------------------------ Mes projets d'étude de la motivation dans le lexique ont commencé par l'étude des phénomènes phonosémantiques dans le lexique: notamment les amalgames cognitifs (Smith 2012) et les mots phonesthèmiques (Smith 2016). Ces travaux ont montré que le phonosymbolisme est loin d'être un phénomène à la marge, et des structures non morphémiques comme fl- ont la capacité de structurer le lexique (notamment le lexique mental voir Bergen). Une approche constructionnelle de ces structures non conventionnelles semble être en mesure d'expliquer la force d'attraction de ces formes longtemps ignorées en linguistique traditionnelle. 3.5. Le projet MultiDES ----------------------- **Actuellement le projet MultiDES représente un nouvel axe majeur sur les questions de synonymie et de polysémie interlangue au CRISCO. Co-porteuse du projet MultiDES au CRISCO,** qui fait l’objet d’une demande de financement RIN, déposé en novembre 2020. Au sein du laboratoire CRISCO, le projet MultiDES consiste en un objectif principal : élaborer une extension synonymique français-anglais, tout en faisant évoluer l'outil existant pour affiner le paramétrage actuel des relations synonymiques et leur contextualisation Le MultiDES fait un pari innovant : envisager les deux langues comme un seul espace sémantique en intégrant les synonymes anglais à ceux du français, et réciproquement. Cette nouvelle option aboutira à la possibilité d’une interface multimodale présentant les synonymes dans une seule langue ou bien dans deux (et à long terme dans plusieurs). 3.6.
