Cécile Cottenet

Cécile Cottenet is Professor of US Studies (Civilisation des Etats-Unis) at Aix-Marseille Université, and a member of LERMA (Laboratoire d'Etudes et de Recherche sur le Monde Anglophone, UR 853). She specializes in book and publishing history, connecting with African American studies. Her current interest is on transatlantic, Franco-American circulation of literary texts, with a particular focus on mediators and intermediaries, and literary agents. She is the Principal Investigator and general editor of *[Dictionnaire des passeurs de la littérature des Etats-Unis](https://https://dicopalitus.huma-num.fr/)* (2023). She is the editor of a collection of essays, *Race, Ethnicity and Publishing in America* (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), and the author of two monographs: the first, in French, tracing the publishing history of African American author Charles W. Chesnutt's first volume of stories, *Une histoire éditoriale: The Conjure Woman de Charles W Chesnutt* (ENS Editions, 2012). The second, building on extensive archival work in France and in the United States, examines the figure of literary agent from a historical perspective, on the basis of the case study of the Hoffman Agency (*Literary Agents in the Transatlantic Book Trade. American Fiction, French Rights, and the Hoffman Agency*, Routledge, 2017). As of January 2024, she is co-editor of the online journal \*e-Rea\* on whose editorial board she has served. She currently serves on the jury of the Prix de la recherche SAES/ AFEA (2022-2026), on the advisory boards of the online graduate students' journal, *Cahiers de la Création* (https://journals.openedition.org/lcc/). She also serves on the advisory boards of the Modernist Archives Publishing Project (MAPP), and the "Material Modernisms" series (Palgrave Macmillan).
