Après des études de physique à l'Ecole normale supérieure jusqu’au doctorat, une étude expérimentale des propriétés d’organisation de cristaux liquides minéraux, puis une formation complémentaire d’ingénieur en eau et environnement à l'Ecole des ponts ParisTech, Bruno Lemaire a pris un premier poste sur l’aménagement des ports maritimes et des voies navigables au ministère en charge des transports (actuel CEREMA, 2004-2008).
Depuis 2008, il enseigne l’hydrologie à [AgroParisTech](http://www.agroparistech.fr) : gestion des eaux pluviales, protection contre les inondations, retenues pour l’irrigation, restauration hydromorphologique, réutilisation.
Jusqu’à son habilitation à diriger les recherches, ses travaux au [Laboratoire eau, environnement et systèmes urbains](https://www.leesu.fr/) portaient sur le fonctionnement physique et biogéochimique des plans d’eau, pour la surveillance de la qualité de l’eau et l’alerte.
Dans l’unité de recherche [Hydrosystèmes continentaux anthropisées](https://www6.jouy.inrae.fr/hycar/) d’INRAE depuis 2020, il poursuit le développement d’un système de mesure des échanges turbulents de substances dissoutes au fond des milieux aquatiques, projet initié comme AgreenSkills fellow à l’[Université de Coblence-Landau](https://www.uni-koblenz-landau.de/en/campus-landau/faculty7/environmental-sciences/uphys-en/uphys-en). Ses recherches portent plus généralement sur les plans d’eau au sein de leur bassin versant, notamment sur l’impact hydrologique des retenues et sur le traitement des eaux de drainage agricole par zone-tampon humide, tous deux abordés par la modélisation.

Since 2008, he has been teaching hydrology at AgroParisTech: stormwater management, flood protection, irrigation reservoirs, hydromorphological restoration, water reuse. Until his habilitation to supervise research, his work at the Water, Environment and Urban Systems Laboratory focused on the physical and biogeochemical functioning of water bodies, for water quality monitoring and warning. Since 2020, he has been working at the INRAE research unit Hydrosystèmes continentaux anthropisées, where he is developing a system for measuring the turbulent exchange of dissolved substances at the bottom of aquatic environments, a project initiated as an AgreenSkills fellow at the University of Koblenz-Landau. His research focuses more generally on water bodies within their catchment areas, in particular on the hydrological impact of reservoirs and the treatment of agricultural drainage water by wetland buffers, both of which are addressed by modelling.
