Bernadette Montanari

I am a social scientist with degrees (PhD in Ethnobiology and Master of Science in Ethnobotany) from the University of Kent, UK. My work is interdisciplinary, at the intersection between ethnobiology, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, development studies, and policies. I am interested in community and women's enterprise based on research and development of natural natural niche products, taken into account all intrinsic and extrinsic aspects (communities' inherent attributes, natural resource management, local and national policies; more generally, factors that either facilitate or hinders community's socio-economic development. Initially, I studied alternative paths for commercializing medicinal and aromatic plants so that local Amazigh communities in the High Atlas of Moroccobenefits could benefit financially from the trade. I then investigated how a "participatory" essential oil distillation project with the same communities of the High Atlas was implemented; my study offered a critical analysis of the development mechanisms for implementing the project. Along the same line and with funding from the European Union, I investigated the role of rural women under the policies of the Green Morocco Plan and the integration of Traditional Knowledge to achieve income generating activities (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/657223). This project was hosted by the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in the Netherlands and an outgoing phase at the Department of Geography and GIS at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, USA. I recently completed the project “Moving Beyond Access to Benefit Sharing” (MBABS https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/894416 ) funded by the European Union. In this project, I investigated the mechanisms of Access to Benefit Sharing (ABS) of the Nagoya Protocol with mint (*Mentha arvensis* L.) cultivators in the State of Uttar Pradesh, India and with women of Argan oil cooperatives in Morocco, and how the impact of ABS policies on Moroccan rural women and the cultivators. My research project was hosted at the Centre for Research in Anthropology (CRIA) at the University Institute of Lisbon in collaboration with the Department of Botany at the University of Lucknow, India and with other partners in Morocco.

Je suis diplômée de l'université du Kent (Royaume-Uni), où j'ai obtenu un doctorat en ethnobiologie et une maîtrise en sciences en ethnobotanique. Mon travail est interdisciplinaire, à l'intersection entre l'ethnobiologie, l'ethnobotanique, l'anthropologie, les études de développement. Je m’intéresse à l’entreprise communautaire et féminine basée sur la recherche et le développement de produits niche naturels, en tenant compte des aspects intrinsèques et extrinsèques (attributs inhérents des communautés, gestion de ressources naturelles, politiques locales et nationales); et plus généralement, les facteurs qui facilitent ou entravent le développement socio-économique de la communauté. Mes travaux initiaux ont étudié des alternatives de commercialisation pour des plantes médicinales et aromatiques afin que les communautés amazighes dans le Haut Atlas du Maroc puissent beneficier de ces revenus. J'ai ensuite conduit une recherche sur la manière dont un projet "participatif" de distillation d'huile essentielle avec ces mêmes communautés du Haut Atlas a été mis en œuvre ; mon étude a offert une analyse critique des mécanismes de développement pour la mise en œuvre du projet. Dans le même ordre d'idées et grâce à un financement de l'Union européenne, j'ai étudié le rôle des femmes rurales dans le cadre des politiques du Plan Maroc Vert et de l'intégration des connaissances traditionnelles pour réaliser des activités génératrices de revenus (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/657223). Ce projet a été accueilli par l'Institut international d'études sociales (ISS) aux Pays-Bas avec une phase sortante au département de géographie et de SIG de l'Université de l'Illinois, Urbana Champaign, USA. Dans le cadre de ce projet, j'ai étudié les mécanismes d'attribution de l'accès au partage des avantages (APA) du protocole de Nagoya avec des cultivateurs d une espece de menthe (*Mentha arvensis* L. ) dans l'etat de l' Uttar Pradesh en Inde ainsi qu'avec des femmes de cooperatives de l'huile d'Argan au Maroc, et les consequences des directives de l' APA sur les cultivateurs et les femmes rurales marocaines. Mon projet de recherche a été accueilli au Centre de recherche en anthropologie (CRIA) de l'Institut universitaire de Lisbonne, en collaboration avec le département de botanique de l'université de Lucknow, en Inde, et avec d'autres partenaires au Maroc. **Publications ** **Montanari, B**.
