Présentation

Educated in Law, Islamic sciences and political sciences, my career was up to now a combined contribution to the fundamental study of law and norms in action and to their contextualization in Muslim environments. In doing this I have also assumed a range of academic and institutional responsibilities, based on the recognition of my scientific leadership and achievements in a number of international instances. My approach to law and norms has been widely recognised as path-breaking, with regard to the Arab and Muslim contexts as well as at a general level. Early on, I highlighted the need for the empirical study of law and norms in action and in context, based on documentary material, ethnography, and detailed observation of actual people’s situated practices. Such a method and its underlying epistemology proved most fruitful to better understand the complexity of rules, rule-formulating and rule-following in their social and cultural environment. It largely respecified the study of norms and laws, shifting from a formal, abstract and abusively theoretical perspective to a contextual, people-oriented and action-designed attention to practice. Though challenging, it received great international recognition.
