Scientific Expertise

Research covers nanophotonics and plasmonics. The objective is controlling optical phenomena at the subwavelength scale for biomedical, optoelectronic and photonic circuit applications (including routes to quantum optical devices).

Within international collaborations or by itself,  Prof. A. Dereux's group achieved several world premieres:

  • Near-field optical microscopy: detection of magnetic component of optical field and optical local density of states; observation of light confinement;characterisations of optoelectronic devices.

  • Demonstration of surface plasmon waveguides: frequently cited, this result belongs to the pioneering works that triggered the strong interest for plasmonics observed worldwide for more than 20 years.

  • Development of Dielectric Loaded Surface Plasmon waveguide technology reaching the first demonstration of plasmonic devices - exploiting simulaneaously the electrical conductivity and the transmission of data at IR telecom frequencies - operating in true optical data traffic conditions (FP7 Platon and in FP7 IP Phoxtrot)

  • Development of fully operational CMOS compatible plasmonic devices (H2020 Plasmoniac, H2020 Plasmofab.)

     

Management Highlights

Since 1995: Research group in nanophotonics, plasmonics, near-field optics (5 Faculty members, 2 technical staff, successful grant applications filed personally > 8 M€).

Since 2004: Participation to European projects. During 2004-2008: Coordinator of FP6 Network of Excellence “Plasmo-Nano-Devices” involving 17 partners in 8 countries. 

2006: Configuration of a 1000 m2 nanotechnology facility inaugurated in 2009.

2007: Chairman of the 3d International Conference on Surface Plasmon Photonics. Currently member of the steering committee of this conference series (steering committee chair from 2007 to 2013).

2008-2015: Elected twice as member of the Board of the University of Bourgogne.

Since 2012: Director of Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Carnot de Bourgogne (Nanosciences, Photonics, Material Sciences). Jointly operated by CNRS & UBFC, this laboratory features 127 Faculty members and researchers, as well as 46 technical staff. The research contract budget allows to support around 100 PhD and post-docs.

Since 2016: Coordinator of the French excellence initiative project ISITE-BFC (Initiative for the Site Bourgogne Franche-Comté) selected in January 2016, after a 2 year selection process, by an international jury (see pages 8-10 of this link). Dealing with both research and training aspects,  the project features a 47 M€ grant over 5 years (eligible costs not including overheads and permanent staff costs).
